About

Rocky Ford Rural Fire Protection District

The Rocky Ford Rural Fire Protection District serves a population of 5,900, with approximately 3,756 residents within city limits. The district encompasses 1.7 square miles within the city and an additional 762 square miles outside of city limits. A Community Wildfire Protection Plan developed in June 2013 for Otero County identified several areas of highest concern specific to Rocky Ford. These include a welding business, multiple feedlots, an implement business, the Crystal Lake recreation area, and extensive portions of the Comanche National Grasslands. Additionally, key highways within the jurisdiction, such as Hwy 50, Hwy 350, Hwy 10, Hwy 71, Hwy 202, and Hwy 266, are protected.

The district also oversees two railroads - BNSF and Amtrak - as well as the Arkansas River watershed, tributaries, and irrigation ditches. Overall, the Rocky Ford Rural Fire Protection District covers 60% of Otero County. All hazard calls for service are managed through the Rocky Ford Emergency Communications Center, operated by the City of Rocky Ford.

Known for their exceptional melons and cantaloupe, the district is always eager to welcome new volunteers and encourages you to apply!
