FOR FIRE PERSONNEL

helping to recruit & retain

Recruitment and retention of Volunteer Firefighters are two of the key issues that local Volunteer Fire Departments face. Many are struggling to meet staffing needs. At the same time, call volume has more than tripled in the last 35 years, due in large part to the increase in emergency medical calls.

VolunteerFirefighter.org is here to help. We work with various fire associations nationwide to offer grant writing services aimed at obtaining SAFER Grants for their organizations. This initiative enables departments in those regions to access SAFER Grant funding, which is designated for crucial expenses that support the recruitment and retention of Volunteer Firefighters. Once an association is awarded a SAFER Grant, we work closely with them to oversee the management of the grant funds, ensuring that the money is appropriately allocated to meet these needs. This support includes providing marketing tools to facilitate recruitment efforts, as well as reimbursements for significant expenses such as personal protective equipment (PPE), training, physical exams, and more.

Your Role in the Recruitment & Retention Process

Leadership extends well beyond the lines of duty; it also encompasses the recruitment of new firefighter candidates to ensure a department is equipped to protect lives and property in the community. But recruitment is only part of the equation. Leaders also focus on retaining volunteers by recognizing their contributions, offering opportunities for growth, and fostering a positive and inclusive culture within the department.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

As representatives of their departments, fire service leaders actively engage with the community through events, schools, and public forums to promote the need for volunteers. They emphasize the personal and professional advantages of serving, motivating potential recruits to join.

mentorship & team work

Leaders create a culture of mentorship by pairing new volunteers with seasoned firefighters, fostering a supportive learning atmosphere. By promoting teamwork and camaraderie, they help volunteers feel connected and motivated to remain engaged.

ADAPTING TO CHALLENGES

Leaders tackle obstacles to volunteering, such as time limitations and training requirements, by introducing flexible schedules and innovative training options. They also advocate for resources and incentives, like stipends or tax breaks, to enhance accessibility for volunteers.
