General Questions

What does a volunteer firefighter do?

Volunteer Firefighters respond to emergencies such as fires, medical calls, rescues, and hazardous situations. They may also participate in community outreach and fire prevention activities.

Do I need prior firefighting experience to join?

No, most Volunteer Fire Departments provide training for new members. However, a willingness to learn and a commitment to the role are essential.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Requirements vary by department but may include:

  • Minimum age (usually 18, with some junior programs for younger applicants).

  • Physical fitness. Firefighting is physically demanding. Departments may conduct fitness assessments as part of the application process.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Background check.

Do I need to live near the fire station?

Most departments require volunteers to live within a certain distance to ensure timely response to emergencies. Some departments may require that you live in the area for a minimum of one year prior to volunteering.

TRAINING & COMMITMENT

What kind of training is required?

There is both mandatory and optional training provided year-round. Training typically includes:

  • Basic firefighting skills.

  • First aid and CPR.

  • Incident management.

  • Specialized training for specific roles (e.g., hazardous materials, rescue operations).

What will the training and supplies cost me?

There is typically no cost to you as a new recruit. All necessary equipment, supplies and materials are paid for by the department.

How much time is required?

Time commitments include:

  • Training sessions (weekly or monthly). Most departments require periodic training to maintain skills and certifications.

  • Emergency response. This varies by department and depends on factors such as the number of calls the department receives.

  • Meetings and community events.

Volunteer Departments prefer volunteers to have the ability to respond to calls 24-hours a day, although most departments still accept volunteers who are unable to leave work or other obligations to respond to a call.

What if I work during the day?

Many volunteers have full-time jobs yet still find it rewarding to serve the community as a firefighter. Most Volunteer Fire Departments are flexible with the time you commit and are willing to work with members.

How many calls does a typical volunteer respond to each month?

It varies depending on the area you live in, and the number of calls received. On average you can expect to dedicate between 20-40 hours a month.

BENEFITS & SUPPORT

Do volunteers receive any sort of compensation?

Most volunteers are unpaid, but some departments offer stipends, reimbursements, or benefits like training and equipment.

What support does the department provide?

Departments often provide:

  • Gear and uniforms.

  • Access to training and certifications.

  • Peer support and camaraderie.

Can volunteering lead to a career in firefighting?

Yes, volunteering can provide valuable experience and connections that may help in pursuing a full-time firefighting career.

What if something happens to me?
